The Activity we conducted in class is Material exploration. The gist of this activity was to introduce us to the different type of materials and the concept of changing a design so that another material can be used. For this activity, we initially chose stainless steel as our material that we planned on using when we changed a design of an object. However, as we started to try and use stainless steel, we realised that our options were very limited because stainless steel has been incorporated into many everyday objects.
After much thought, we decided to change our material where we stumbled across a material called Luminex. Luminex is a material that can glow in the dark and is a type of fabric which allow it to be used for many designs such as the one shown below.
However, since Luminex is flammable and can be easily scratched off, we had to change and adapt our initial design for Luminex which was for it to be used in rescue equipment such as life jackets.
To solve this problem, we decided that laminating or covering the Luminex fabric with a layer of plastic when using it would be our best solution to solve the problem of it getting scratched off.
